Job description

Full-Stack Software Engineer (Data Pipeline Focus) An active TS//SCI clearance with polygraph is required for this role 👋🏼 Hey! Bitwise is a leading provider of mission-focused intelligence solutions that advance national security for the Intelligence Community and Department of Defense. We're a small and growing company, so you can expect to hop in on the ground floor with us and be a consequential member of the team. You'll be more than a contract performer for us — you'll also be asked for ideas to improve our company and improve your career, and you'll contribute to our team culture. We value growth and community above almost all else, so we gather regularly for game nights, happy hours, tech talks, and plenty more. We think you'll like it here! Remember, Bitwise is not a cult. 🖖🏼 🎯 What We Look For Bitwise hires talented engineers who are driven by purpose and who value a culture of technical excellence, growth, and overall wellness. We deliver new and innovative intelligence solutions to our customers at the very forefront of our country's national security missions. And we do it every single day. Our work matters, and so will you. We ask that every new hire be able to: • Contribute meaningful thought leadership — if not right away, over time • Interact with our customers and earn their confidence in your abilities • Be detailed, even if that means taking a little more time to get it right • Contribute their ideas and ideals to improve all aspects of our company • Allow us to invest in their education so we both grow together • Know and live our core values every single day 💡 About this Role You'll join a small, tight-knit team of 3–4 engineers within a broader 20+ person development organization supporting a mature, mission-critical web platform. This platform ingests diverse publicly available information sources and transforms them into a powerful analytical tool used by hundreds of mission customers. You'll contribute across the full stack—designing and implementing data processing workflows, building scalable REST APIs, and enhancing user-facing visualizations—while working with large-scale data ingestion, complex queries, and interactive analysis. In this role, you'll drive the continual evolution of a robust software system, focusing on code quality, testing, documentation, and ticket management. You'll leverage established design patterns and modern AI platforms to streamline code development, data transformation, and schema management. You'll manage and optimize data storage and retrieval using Elasticsearch, Dgraph, MongoDB, and Redis, while understanding API-driven microservice design patterns and dataflow tools like Apache NiFi. You'll contribute to every part of the data processing lifecycle—from collection and processing to storage and presentation in our UI. You'll collaborate closely with analysts, product owners, and fellow engineers to ensure solutions meet operational needs. As a team player in a fast-paced, structured environment, you'll provide mentorship to teammates, help identify process improvements to accelerate delivery of new data sources, and bring ideas to the table for improving team efficiency and tooling. This is a long-running software effort known for its technical stability, team cohesion, and deep integration into mission-critical systems—a place where you can make meaningful contributions and grow your skills. 📋 Requirements • 12+ years of relevant experience with a B.S. in a technical discipline, or 16+ years of relevant experience without a degree • Extensive software engineering experience in Java, including developing Java-based REST APIs • Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g., Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, Dgraph, or similar) • Proficiency in at least two of the following: • Spring Boot REST APIs and Spring Libraries (Spring Security, Spring Data, etc.) • Data wrangling and dataflow (data discovery, mining, analysis, cleaning, exploration, modeling, structuring, transforming, enriching, and validating) • Dataflow tools such as Apache NiFi • Familiarity with Git for version control, and Maven and/or npm for build automation • Proficiency working in a Linux development environment • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new tools, technologies, and workflows • Experience using Atlassian task-tracking and documentation tools like Jira and Confluence, or similar platforms • Excellent communication and teamwork skills 🌟 Preferred Skills • Experience with various corporate data formats • Leveraged AI platforms to assist in hybrid automated/manual data transformation, code development, and schema management • Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab) and automated testing (e.g., JUnit) • Advanced knowledge of containerization and orchestration platforms, including Docker/Podman and Kubernetes • Proficiency in JSON and JSON Schemas or similar schema frameworks, with a strong background in data modeling concepts and techniques • Experience with AWS services (EC2, S3, SQS, SNS, Lambdas, etc.) • Scripting with Bash, Python, and/or Groovy • Knowledge of event-driven or messaging technologies such as Kafka or RabbitMQ • Frontend development experience with modern JavaScript and a GUI framework like Vue.js • Experience with production operations and capabilities 🏝️ Benefits at Bitwise • Top salaries because we're top performers • Pick your PTO — Everyone values time and money differently, so we give you the flexibility to choose between 3 and 5 weeks of PTO with a corresponding adjustment to your pay. Your choice, your balance. • All 11 federal holidays, paid! • Up to 2 snow days, paid! • We'll quadruple (4x!) the first 6% you contribute to your 401(k), giving you up to a 24% company match.
