Job description

Role: Mechanical Engineering Intern Type: Internship (full-time, 40 hours/week) Location: San Diego, CA (in-office) Pay: $30/hourly Role Overview: Seasats designs and deploys autonomous surface vehicles that operate at sea for months at a time. These missions depend on robust, well-designed mechanical systems that can survive harsh maritime environments with minimal human intervention. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you’ll work closely with our mechanical engineering team to support the design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of vehicle hardware, contributing to projects that actually go to sea. This is a full-time, in-person internship running from approximately early January through May 2027. Applicants should be available to work throughout the duration of the internship. Role Details: • Design mechanical parts and simple assemblies in CAD (SolidWorks) • Update and maintain CAD models, drawings, and basic BOMs • Assist with fixtures, tooling, and jigs for assembly and testing • Support part sourcing and communication with suppliers • Help assemble and inspect mechanical components and subassemblies • Participate in testing of new and existing vehicle components • Support documentation, configuration management, and organization of design files • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers on electro-mechanical systems About You: You’re someone who wants to design and build things; you’ve probably already built some cool stuff. You proactively spot problems, ask questions, and pursue solutions. Specifically, you probably have: • Completed 2-3 years of coursework towards a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field • Hands-on experience using SolidWorks for part and assembly design • Ability to read and create basic mechanical drawings • Strong attention to detail and willingness to iterate based on feedback • Comfortable working in a fast-moving, hands-on environment Due to export control requirements applicable to this position, we are only able to consider U.S. persons, as defined by U.S. export control laws. This includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and individuals granted asylee or refugee status. Additionally, you may have one or more of the following qualifications: • Internship, project, club, or competition experience (Formula SAE, robotics, robotics teams, etc.) • Experience with manufacturing methods (3D printing, CNC, waterjet, shop tools) • Interest in robotics, autonomous systems, or maritime environments • Basic familiarity with GD&T • Exposure to electrical or software systems in a mechanical context About Seasats: At Seasats, we're passionate about delivering maritime robotics solutions to redefine the maritime industry. Our primary products are unmanned surface vessels (USVs), designed to carry sensors at sea for months at a time. Our USVs provide persistent monitoring and data acquisition to defense, scientific, and commercial customers, and have autonomously crossed both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. After thousands of years in which the only way to gather information from the ocean was to put people on a boat, these uncrewed vessels are transforming how humanity monitors and interacts with the ocean. Here, you’ll find the space and opportunity to do your life’s best work. Along with your salary, you’ll receive perks including: • 401k matching up to 4% of salary • Four free lunches per week • An employee activity fund • A pet-friendly office Hiring Notes: When applying, you’ll be asked to provide a resume and answer a few screening questions. Please note that we are currently unable to sponsor employment visas, so candidates must be independently authorized to work in the United States. We appreciate diverse perspectives and life experiences, and we’re committed to building a team that reflects a wide range of backgrounds. Seasats provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination of any type based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, or gender identity), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected under federal, state, or local law.
