Job description

Tutored by Teachers is a fast-growing, mission-driven company working to close the opportunity gap. A national leader in high-dosage tutoring, TbT partners with school districts across the country to deliver exceptional academic outcomes for high-need students powered by our community of amazing educators. TbT has delivered more than 1 million hours of tutoring and paid over $30 million directly to our teachers. We’ve built a significant business with a small, highly accountable team by staying relentlessly focused on outcomes and quality. We’re looking for a finance leader to help us navigate our next stage of growth. The Role We are looking for a VP, Finance to own the finance function and serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and leadership team. We’re looking for someone who wants to understand how the whole company works, has a point of view on our biggest decisions, and is eager to solve problems beyond the traditional boundaries of Finance. You turn over stones, ask why, and notice when something doesn’t add up. Once you own something, the CEO shouldn’t have to worry about whether it will get done. You should be equally comfortable tackling a Board-level strategic question and digging into a spreadsheet, contract, payment process, or operating issue to understand what’s really going on. You will report directly to the CEO. Responsibilities • FP&A. Own forecasting, annual planning, scenario modeling, and long-range financial planning. • Management Reporting. Build a clear operating cadence around the financial and operating KPIs that matter. • Budgeting & Resource Allocation. Help leaders make better hiring, spending, and investment decisions -- and hold teams accountable for their numbers. • Cash & Treasury. Own cash forecasting, working capital, treasury, and liquidity management. • Accounting. Oversee external accounting partners, AP/AR, tax coordination, and financial controls. • Deal Desk. Support major customer, vendor, and partnership negotiations with rigorous financial analysis. • Board & Investor Reporting. Partner with the CEO on Board materials, investor communications, fundraising, and strategic financial matters. • Strategic Decision Support. Turn ambiguous business questions into structured analysis, recommendations, and action. • Cross-Functional Initiatives. Step into important problems that don’t fit neatly within another function and drive them to resolution. What Success Looks Like • Leadership has a trusted, simple view of company performance. • Forecasts meaningfully guide hiring, investment, and growth decisions. • Department leaders understand their budgets and own their numbers. • Finance surfaces risks and opportunities instead of simply reporting what already happened. • Important decisions are backed by rigorous financial and strategic analysis. • The CEO spends materially less time managing financial processes and chasing information. • You become one of the CEO’s most trusted thought partners. • Your scope expands as you demonstrate the ability to lead beyond Finance. Requirements What Success Looks Like • Leadership has a trusted, simple view of company performance. What We're Looking For We care more about aptitude, trajectory, and evidence of exceptional performance than checking every box. You likely have: • 8+ years of experience across strategic finance, FP&A, finance leadership, BizOps, consulting, banking, private equity, corporate strategy, or similar roles. • Meaningful operating experience inside a growing company. • Strong command of financial statements, accounting, forecasting, cash management, unit economics, and corporate finance. • Exceptional analytical and financial modeling skills. • Experience using data and analysis to influence major business decisions. • Experience presenting to executive teams and/or Boards. • Experience building better systems, processes, and operating cadences. • The judgment to know when to stay at 30,000 feet and when to get into the weeds. Experience with B2B services, education, technology-enabled services, M&A, fundraising, or transactional work is helpful but not required. Traits We Want to See in Everyone Adapted from Carrol Chang, CEO of Andela • Low ego, low drama, servant leader. You share credit, take blame. You like being wrong because it means someone else had an even better idea. • One team mentality. You break silos across teams. You put the company and mission first above your team alone. • Great listener, hungry for feedback. You’re always seeking to improve – our product, our business, yourself. You solicit diverse opinions and deeply listen. • Owner, not renter. You see a problem, you fix it or find someone who will. The buck stops with you. • Player-coach. You fly high (create strategy) AND low (know the details that matter). You roll up your sleeves and get scrappy. You do this without micromanaging, empowering your team while actively engaging in important details. • Business problem solver. You’re not just a functional expert; you consistently get praise for approaching your function through the lens of solving business problems. • Information worker. You aggressively, directly, and succinctly communicate up, down, left, and right using the right channels. Benefits We currently offer the following benefits: • 100% healthcare coverage for you and your family • Access to 401k to help save for the future • Well-rounded wellness benefits, including access to free and low cost mental health resources and support services • Fully remote work environment and a flexible schedule • Unlimited vacation policy to help recharge • The chance to make a meaningful impact on students' lives and contribute to the advancement of educational equity.
