Job description
At Amazon, we’re inventing on behalf of customers, and with Amazon Leo, we’re redefining what global connectivity looks like. Our mission is to deliver fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world through a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Every system we build helps connect people to education, healthcare, opportunity, and each other.
As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you will be responsible for developing high-fidelity models of Amazon's LEO satellite constellation and customer terminal algorithms to validate terminal performance globally across residential, aviation, maritime, and automotive applications. You will work in a collaborative environment with a multi-disciplinary team, including constellation, RF, antenna, silicon, algorithm, and software engineers. Your focus will be on architecting, integrating, and verifying core customer terminal algorithms within a simulation framework, encompassing sensor fusion, motion trajectory modeling, and satellite handover evaluation. You will simulate both nominal and off-nominal operating scenarios for mobile user terminals, developing test vectors that stress the system across all application cases and mobility conditions. This role requires bridging hardware and software constraints to optimize run-time algorithms, ensuring reliable satellite connectivity from early prototype validation through mass production.
Key job responsibilities
As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you develop models of Amazon LEO's satellite constellation and user terminal algorithms to validate user terminal performance globally. This includes:
• Collaborating with partner teams to develop and maintain Amazon LEO's constellation model
• Integrating the LEO satellite constellation with various user terminal algorithms
• Developing motion trajectory and orientation models for mobility vehicles/vessels, including aviation, automotive, and maritime platforms
• Simulating nominal and off-nominal operating cases for mobile user terminals
• Validating the end-to-end integration of the Sensor Fusion algorithm with other user terminal software and the satellite constellation
• Developing test vectors to stress user terminals across all application cases, including residential, aviation, maritime, and automotive
• Modeling all application cases—maritime, automotive, and aviation—by developing a sensor fusion model that feeds near-real-time vessel trajectory data to evaluate cell handover, satellite handover, performance at cell boundaries, and handover triggers
• Analyzing and modeling hardware/software capabilities and constraints to optimize run-time algorithms in the user terminal
Export Control Requirement:
Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
A day in the life
As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer on the LEO Customer Terminal Team, you will work daily with satellite constellation, algorithm, RF, antenna, silicon, and software teams in a collaborative environment. Your focus will be on architecting, developing, integrating, and verifying customer terminal core algorithms within a simulation framework.
About the team
The LEO Customer Terminal team is responsible for developing both outdoor and indoor devices that enable customers to access internet service via the LEO satellite network. We own the entire process from early prototypes through mass production, including requirements documentation, architecture definition, hardware development, algorithm development, and all integration and verification testing.
