Job description

Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses. At Relay, our Product team is responsible for shaping our small business banking platform. Small business owners struggle with clarity around cashflow. Our Product and Design teams obsess over turning that uncertainty into confidence. We spend time with business owners, deeply understanding their needs, so we can design tools that give them financial clarity in everything from everyday banking to AI-powered insights. As a designer here, your work directly impacts how thousands of entrepreneurs make better decisions for their businesses. We’re looking for a Sr. Product Designer to help design the future of SMB banking – and the future of the Design function at Relay. You’ll be joining a tight-knit design team of seven, working closely with product managers and engineers from day one. We collaborate early in discovery, critique each other’s work weekly, and value strong opinions, weakly held. You’ll have both the autonomy to own initiatives and the support of peers who care about raising the bar together. Check out our design system documentation storybook.relayfi.design if you love nerding out on that kind of thing! In your first year, you might: - Redesign permissions and notifications so SMBs can confidently delegate financial tasks to their teams. - Simplify the complexity of transaction and fraud workflows so business owners feel secure without being overwhelmed. - Shape the first version in designing AI-driven insights that help entrepreneurs forecast cashflow and make smarter decisions. What You’ll Be Doing - Own design end-to-end: from discovery and problem framing through prototyping to polished, production-ready designs that ship and deliver impact - Raise the craft bar: Create elegant, intuitive, and aesthetically refined interfaces that make banking delightful, not daunting. We’re looking for someone who cares deeply about detail, sweats the interactions, and believes that the quality of our design is inseparable from the quality of our product. - Tell the story: Communicate design rationale through storytelling and artifacts that inspire clarity and alignment across product and engineering. Frame the UX strategy through storytelling, ensuring everyone understands not just the what, but the why behind your design. - Be a design leader: Give and solicit feedback in critique, mentor peers, and contribute to a culture of detail-obsession, openness, and continuous improvement To thrive in this role, you must: - Have 5+ years of experience in product design, with a track record of shipping impactful work. - Have experience designing SaaS based products. - Care deeply about craft. Your work shows strong visual sensibility (typography, hierarchy, layout) paired with thoughtful UX design (flows, IA, cross-platform). - Advocate for design principles and can clearly explain your rationale, ensuring cohesion and consistency across the product experience. - Know how to own the design process end-to-end, from research and framing through to prototyping and iteration resulting in polished, production-ready design. - Believe that great design comes from rigour, not shortcuts: you see research, analysis, and iteration as essential parts of creating high-quality work. - Adapt your tools and methods to fit the stage of the project, and you share best practices with peers while experimenting with new approaches that advance the team’s capabilities. - Bring a user-centered mindset, making decisions rooted in customer needs while balancing business goals. - Are comfortable with complex systems and can simplify them into experiences that feel intuitive and trustworthy. - Use both generative and evaluative research to frame problems and validate solutions, collaborating with product and data teams to ground designs in real insights. - Share your work transparently, seek feedback, and contribute to raising the craft bar for the whole team. - Communicate your design decisions clearly — turning rationale into stories that align teammates and spark conviction. - Have experimented with AI tools for prototyping or user-facing experiences. It’s a bonus (but not required) if you - Have worked in fintech, SaaS, or other complex system domains. - Bring experience designing platform-wide features like permissions, notifications, or multi-tenant systems. - Have familiarity with front-end development, motion design, or illustration. - Have mentored or coached peers, helping to raise the design craft of those around you. The Interview Process: - Stage 1: A 45-minute Google Meet call with a member of the People team - Stage 2: A 45-minute conversation with our Director of Product Design around your approach to the design process, and the craft of design. - Stage 3: A 60-minute design review & live critique with our Director of Product Design, our Staff Design Engineer, and a Staff Product Manager. - Stage 4: A 45-minute in-person interview with a member of Relay’s executive team - Stage 5: A design assignment based on the previous critique to form the basis of our final 60 minute interview. At Relay, we believe Relayers should feel valued for the impact they have on our mission and growth. So we pay fairly and transparently. We are hiring across 2 levels: Senior Product Designer I, and Senior Product Designer II. The annual salary range for this role is $117,000 CAD to $143,000 CAD; or $144,000 to $176,000, respectively. We pay for impact and aren’t tied to yearly reviews. As your contributions to Relay’s mission scale, so do your rewards. Most new Relayers will join at the impactful level, which for this role is $130,000 CAD per year, or $160,000 CAD per year, respectively. The range represents the potential for impact within the role, from developing to having an outsized impact. We encourage you to have a conversation with your recruiter and ask questions about compensation throughout the hiring process. Our Commitment To You: - Competitive salary and meaningful equity: Relay employees are Relay owners, complete with equity and a competitive salary. - Comprehensive health benefits: enjoy full health benefits from day one: no probation period required. We offer flexible Health or Wellness Spending Accounts and medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents. - Flexible vacation and time off: every team member starts with 15 vacation days and 5 flex days to use as needed, plus an extra week of office closure during the end-of-year holidays so you can take time off to recharge and come back better for our customers. - Parental leave with top-up: we offer 12 weeks off with a 100% salary top-up for all full-time employees, regardless of location, and accessible for all parents: birthing, non-birthing, and adoptive. - Hybrid work environment: we value meaningful collaboration and connection at our Toronto office 3 days a week, with lunch, snacks, and beverages on us. - Dog-friendly space: can dogs really make you happy and healthy? We don’t know for sure, but since we don’t want to chance it, our office is 100% floof-friendly. - Personal and professional growth: through ongoing feedback, mentorship, and coaching, work with peers and leaders who are invested in your growth and success. - Top-tier equipment: as a Mac-first company, our Toronto offices have everything you need to produce your best work comfortably, from multiple screens to ergonomic seating. - Social connection: we believe in celebrating our wins with two annual company-wide get-togethers, quarterly team events, happy hours, and special events and networking opportunities with industry leaders. Why Relay Might Be the Perfect Fit For You - You push relentlessly for reinvention: You're always asking "how can this be better?" -- in your work, in your craft, in yourself. Comfort is a signal to push harder, not coast. You'd rather build something better than defend something familiar. - You crave autonomy: We trust our team with big challenges and the freedom to solve them. If you’re someone who takes initiative, is comfortable taking risks, and seeks input when needed, you’ll find the freedom here empowering. - You own your work: You take pride in your work, follow through on commitments, and feel a deep sense of responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks. - You build with AI, not just use it: You're actively embedding AI into how you work, pushing what's possible, and bringing your team along with you. - You care about impact, not noise: You care deeply about the substance of your work. You measure success by results, not recognition, and you let your work speak for itself. - You’re energized by complexity and ambiguity: You enjoy tackling problems that don’t come with a playbook. You’re comfortable building from scratch, iterating as you go, and collaborating to shape the best path forward. - You seek out feedback: You see directness as respect, not criticism. You actively seek input, sit with hard truths, and use feedback as fuel for improvement. - Small businesses are why we're here: Relay exists to help them thrive -- and that mission has to resonate with you. Join Us We're looking for people who are relentless, curious, and care deeply about the work. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly match the job description -- your perspective and drive matter more. We welcome diverse backgrounds and people who think critically, challenge the status quo, and want to help small businesses thrive.
