Job description
Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era
At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce , Feedonomics , and Makeswift , we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. We believe in harnessing AI responsibly to unlock new possibilities, and we’re looking for individuals who use it intentionally to solve problems, accelerate outcomes, and expand what’s possible in their role. Our purpose is to help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers who shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.
We work as a distributed team across time zones, so we value clear writing and independence: thoughtful design docs, detailed pull requests, async discussions anyone can pick up, and the trust to move your work forward without waiting on others. We believe the people who build something are best placed to ship it, so our engineers take their own changes all the way to production and see them through with confidence. We are a team where you ll have real ownership, and where your work reaches shoppers on every BigCommerce storefront.
BigCommerce, part of the Commerce brand family, helps merchants increase sales at every stage of their growth. From small startups to mid-market businesses and large enterprises, we provide the leading e-commerce platform. Our customers can then concentrate on what s most important: growing their businesses. We enable our customers to build, innovate, and grow, collectively reshaping the e-commerce industry.
What you ll do
Build and maintain features in the service that powers every BigCommerce storefront, working with product managers and partner teams to shape the requirements and design the solution before building and releasing it
Add and extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields, following our schema guidelines so changes stay backward compatible for headless storefronts and third party integrations
Help evolve the storefront service to support AI driven shopping, so that agents and shopping assistants can browse, build carts, and check out for shoppers
Investigate and fix production issues, and improve performance and reliability in the areas of the service you work on
Review code from teammates and the other engineering teams that contribute to the storefront service, and grow your design skills through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers
Who Are You
5 years of experience building backend services that run in production
Education: Preferred minimum Bachelor s degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience
Production experience with Scala or Kotlin preferred; backend engineers experienced in other languages (e.g., Java, Go, etc.) who are eager to learn Scala are encouraged to apply
Experience working with product managers or other stakeholders to turn requirements into a technical design, and delivering it to production
Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals such as caching headers, cookies and sessions, and timeouts
Familiarity with GraphQL APIs
Familiarity with service to service communication and caching (e.g., gRPC, Redis, etc.)
Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Sentry, etc.)
Familiarity with releasing changes safely through feature flags and gradual rollouts
Experience writing automated tests and working with CI/CD pipelines
Uses AI coding assistants as a regular part of development (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, etc.), and reviews AI generated code with the same care as code written by hand
Interest in how AI agents use APIs (e.g., MCP, tool calling, etc.)
