Job description

A 3D printer is one of the most demanding machines you can build. Lasers, optics, precision motion, thermals, airflow, materials handling, chemistry, sensing, controls, and software all have to work at micron-scale precision, for thousands of layers, with almost no tolerance for error. Making that work reliably is an extraordinary engineering problem. That’s what we do. At Formlabs, we’re building 3D printers that are changing the way things get made. We have the smartest minds across every engineering discipline, and the technology they’re building is deployed at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. If you’re energized by the idea of making the impossible happen, come join us as a Senior Mechanical Engineer. Include a portfolio with your application to show us what you can do. The Job: The job is to ship the best desktop 3D printers on the market: Prototype new mechanisms, from precision latches to revolutionary pumps and valves to surfaces measured in microns Test materials that push the boundaries of what 3D printing can do Research 3D printing challenges and rethink every subprocess to push technology forward Analyze, validate, and iterate on electro-mechanical systems Model everything from brackets to hinges to complex parts in CAD, creating well-specified, accurate drawings Partner with Global Sourcing and Manufacturing Teams to bring designs from prototype to mass production Flex your global savvy by working with teams around the world, virtually and in-person. Intermittent travel is expected. Apply your knowledge of manufacturing techniques like injection molding and sheet metal fabrication to the world of 3D printing Solve customer problems by using your engineering skills to eliminate friction at every stage of their workflow You: You can’t wait to build a precision tool that combines the power of injection molding with the beauty of the iPhone. You have 2+ years of industry experience You want to build a precision tool that is beautiful inside and out ( but don’t take our word for it ) You know how to partner with people in any role with the genuine goal of getting work done and doing it well You love the gritty details of part design, material selection, and manufacturing techniques, because you know it’s important to commit to a vision and fail fast You craft elegant designs that function with efficiency and simplicity You work confidently in 3D CAD software (Solidworks/Onshape) to design components, produce drawings, and build assemblies You deeply understand the full product development cycle If you have Python skills, experience with contract manufacturers, know PLM or document control systems, or have a passion for industrial design, we want you to apply! Our Perks & Benefits: Unlimited 3D printing with any Formlabs material on any Formlabs printer An equity program that will let you build wealth through RSUs Healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision) that includes a totally free employee-only plan, effective starting on your first day on the job 401K matching with no vesting or tenure requirement Generous parental leave (fully paid up to 16 weeks) Flexible time off so you can take time when you need it Six-week fully paid sabbatical after hitting tenure milestones (with the option to take an additional six weeks after that) Free on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits Free on-site lunch, snacks, beverages, treats, beer kegs, and employee-favorite local coffee and espresso Self-driven professional development opportunities like conferences, trade shows, and hackathons One-of-a-kind activities and events like monthly socials, the annual weekend summer camp, a can’t-miss company hackathon, and lots of other social opportunities You don’t need to check every box to apply for a role. If you love working with hardware, spending time with smart people, solving hard problems, and winning, we want to hear from you. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Compensation Equity is a big part of the compensation package at Formlabs - every employee receives equity because everyone contributes to building the company. We have a lot of confidence in the products we’re building and the impact we’re making, and you should too. Base pay is the other part of our compensation package, and it is carefully determined based on your skills, experience, and expected impact. Equity and base pay combine to make up your total compensation package at Formlabs. The annual base pay range for this role is: $130,000 — $250,000 USD
