Senior / Staff Software Engineer, Low Latency at Clear Street

Job description

Clear Street is modernizing the brokerage ecosystem. Founded in 2018, Clear Street is a diversified financial services firm replacing the legacy infrastructure used across capital markets. We started from scratch by building a completely cloud-native clearing and custody system designed for today's complex, global market. Our platform is fully integrated with central clearing houses and exchanges to support billions in trading volume per day. We've agonized about our data model abstractions, created horizontal scalability, and crafted thoughtful APIs. All so we can provide a best-in-class experience for our clients. By combining highly-skilled product and engineering talent with seasoned finance professionals, we're building the essentials to compete in today's fast-paced markets. The Team: The mission of the Clear Street Active team is to provide best execution for every asset class in every market. Active is currently building a new, state-of-the-art, cloud-based trading platform providing high-performance traders access to liquidity venues across multiple asset classes, cutting-edge charting capabilities, and sophisticated order handling with the flexibility to service both the active trader and institutional workflows. The Role: Build and scale mission-critical order and execution management infrastructure in Rust, including order workflows, execution logic, and distributed trading services. Design systems that balance low-latency execution, fault tolerance, and strict correctness guarantees across distributed trading workflows Shape the architecture and engineering direction of a rapidly evolving trading platform in a fast-moving, iterative environment. Develop efficient, audit-ready risk controls and venue-specific trading abstractions with a focus on correctness and performance. Translate evolving regulatory and market structure requirements (CAT, Reg NMS, MiFID) into reliable, testable platform capabilities. What We Value: Engineers who are biased toward action and can make thoughtful trade off decisions with incomplete information High ownership and accountability across the full software lifecycle Strong communication and collaboration across engineering, trading, and operations A willingness to challenge assumptions and continuously improve how we build Requirements: 3+ years of experience as a Software Engineer working on low latency systems running in production Experience with production with C++ and/or Rust Nice To Haves: Deep knowledge of order lifecycles and capital‑markets workflows (buy‑side EMS, sell‑side OMS, or exchange matching) Track record of converting regulatory or compliance requirements into reliable, testable code Experience with high-performance messaging protocols; e.g. IPC, multicast, Aeron Knowledge of protocols like FIX, ITCH, or OUCH Experience with a variety of asset classes, including options, futures, crypto Familiarity with international markets and global system design **Active Team Stack:** Rust, Aeron, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, gRPC, Snowflake We Offer: The opportunity to join a small and growing team of good people, where you can make a difference. A new, high-quality code base with little technical debt and room to build new services and features. A meritocratic philosophy that champions collaboration. Competitive compensation, benefits, and perks. The Base Salary Range for this role is $200,000 - $350,000. This range is representative of the starting base salaries for this role at Clear Street. Where a candidate falls in this range will be based on job related factors such as relevant experience, skills, and location.
