Job description

About us Shorthand exists to empower creative teams to produce and publish beautiful, transformative content radically faster. We’ve begun our journey by creating an easy-to-use platform for one of the most creatively and technically demanding use cases on the web — immersive feature stories — and we’re proud to count many of the world’s best known and most discerning publishers, brands, not-for-profits, and universities as loyal customers. Shorthand is a growing, investor-backed company with customers on every continent (except Antarctica!), and there’s never been a more exciting time to join our band of geeks with art and heart. We’re looking for a Product Marketing Lead to join our team on the US West Coast on a fully remote basis. The role comes with a high level of responsibility and autonomy and is a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious but down-to-earth team making an outsized positive impact in the digital publishing space. What you’ll be doing You’ll own Shorthand’s story: who it’s for and how we talk about it. You’ll shape our positioning with the CEO and VP of Growth & Marketing, give Sales the narratives and proof to close deals, lead our launches, and write copy that has a point of view. We’re looking for someone who believes a product should stand out, and who’s experienced in crafting a distinctive narrative that cuts through. You’ll be our sole product marketer, joining a small, fast-paced Growth & Marketing team that already covers content, demand gen, community, and design. This is a senior but hands-on role, with real influence over how Shorthand is seen, sold, and built. Anyone can sign up and start building stories in Shorthand. Most of our business comes to us inbound, and our sales team works each deal from first conversation to signed contract. Your job is to make sure every step tells the same clear, compelling story. You’ll know it’s working when Sales reaches for your materials first and we see stronger conversion and shorter sales cycles. Bonus points when people can tell a piece of Shorthand marketing is ours before they see the logo. You’ll report to the VP of Growth & Marketing and partner with the CEO, Head of Sales, and Product team. Much of the team you’ll work with is in Australia and New Zealand, and our Head of Sales is in California. We collaborate async-first, and live calls with the ANZ team usually fall in your afternoon (Australia’s morning). In this role, you will: Shape Shorthand’s positioning, segmentation, and core value propositions with the CEO and our Marketing, Sales, and Product leaders, giving Shorthand a distinctive voice and point of view Develop a deep understanding of our buyers, users, market, and competitors, and turn it into tools the whole company uses Build messaging frameworks, use cases, and proof points that support a sales-led motion, from first touch through to expansion Work with customers to learn how they measure the value of Shorthand, and turn that evidence into reusable proof Make Sales more confident and effective, with sharper deal narratives, objection handling, competitive positioning, and supporting decks and one-pagers Make sure people who sign up to try Shorthand understand its value quickly, and help turn that early interest into sales conversations Lead product and feature launches end-to-end — strategy and KPIs, the narrative, and coordinating execution across the company Bring customer, market, and competitive perspective to decisions on pricing and packaging Keep our voice and messaging consistent across the website, product pages, sales materials, lifecycle emails, and in-product touchpoints Work with Product and Design on how features are framed, named, and introduced to customers Feed market insight and customer feedback back into product strategy and roadmap discussions Use Shorthand to tell Shorthand’s story — your own launches and enablement should show what the product can do What we’re looking for The successful candidate will have: A bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience. At least 4 years in product marketing or a closely related role, ideally in B2B SaaS or technology. A track record of positioning work you drove yourself. A conviction that products should stand out. You’d rather be memorable than safe and forgettable, but you know the difference between personality and gimmick. Experience supporting a sales-led motion with enterprise buyers, including sales enablement materials (decks, one-pagers, launch assets) that you can tie to revenue outcomes. Demonstrated success in partnering with leadership and cross-functional teams (including Sales, Product, and Marketing) to influence product, pricing, and go-to-market decisions. Outstanding writing and communication. You’ll work closely with our content team, but they won’t be your ghostwriters: you’ll write shippable copy yourself, from website headlines and product pages to launch emails and sales decks. You can appeal to a specific buyer in a voice that’s energetic and never flat. The ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution, prioritizing impact while maintaining high standards. A passion for visual storytelling and communicating product value on the web. Show us your work. Please include links to at least two pieces of work you’ve created — content, messaging, or sales enablement. If you include a cover letter, we’d love to hear from you, not Claude. You’ll be a great fit for our team if: You have exceptional attention to detail. You are collaborative and know how to work with others to meet shared goals. You are a proactive self-starter, who does not need to be told what to do and will be resourceful in order to find solutions to any challenge. You thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment, and possess a high level of intellectual curiosity. You are intrinsically motivated, deriving happiness from a job well done. Why work for us We offer: Options for working your way: fully remote working, flexible hours and an allowance for a co-working space if you prefer. True autonomy, with the freedom to grow the role, and the chance to shape how our product is perceived, positioned, and sold. The opportunity to work in a growing SaaS company that is still small enough that you can make a real impact. An allowance for setting up your home office, a laptop, and any peripherals you need to do your job. An Employee Option Plan for all team members. A Health and Wellness fund to support your healthy lifestyle, as well as access to coaching and counseling services. Paid parental leave if you are growing your tribe. A 401(k) plan and 100% employer-paid healthcare premiums for US-based team members. An annual learning allowance to support your professional development. The base salary range for this position is US$135,000–$165,000. Actual compensation will depend on your skills, experience and local market benchmarks. Shorthand’s interview process We value direct communication here at Shorthand and want to be transparent on how we hire. Our process involves: An initial Zoom screen : You’ll have an informal Zoom meeting with the hiring manager to discuss your background, the role, and what led you to apply. A work task : We’ll ask you to complete a take-home task, similar to the work you’ll be doing in the role. This should take approximately 2-4 hours. This helps us to verify that you’d be a great fit for the role, and helps you better understand what you’d be doing if you joined our team. Even if we love your work, we won’t use it. This task is intended solely to help us make an informed hiring decision. Interviews : You’ll have interviews with the hiring panel over Zoom. This means you’ll typically get to meet another 3 people from Shorthand, including our CEO. Final checks : The successful candidate will undergo a reference and criminal background check prior to us sending the final employment agreement. Our workplace is 100% distributed and all interviews are conducted virtually unless otherwise advised. Please let us know of any reasonable accommodations you may need during the interview process.
