What Your Job Will Be Like: We seek a motivated R&D staff member (Materials Science) to join the Materials Physics department and work at the interface of Physics, Materials Science, and Electrical Engineering. The candidate will be expected to have significant and diverse experiences in the fabrication of novel nanoscale devices within cleanroom environments. The successful candidate will be expected to take over the management and operations of a small cleanroom onsite; coordinate interactions with and facilitate access to local external cleanrooms (such as LLNL, LBNL and Stanford University) to enable extended fabrication capabilities; work with other researchers in the department on device fabrication, testing, and characterization; and develop independent research in emerging areas at the intersection of Physics, Materials Science, or Electrical Engineering. On any given day you may be called on to: • Coordinate maintenance on cleanroom instruments • Manage and maintain safety in fabrication laboratories • Educate and oversee the local nanofabrication community • Interact with external fabrication facilities to expand access to the user community • Develop new fabrication methods for novel microelectronic devices • Develop new programmatic directions for utilization of the nanofabrication facilities • Travel to local cleanrooms to perform fabrication operations not available at SNL • Perform materials and device fabrication research in collaboration with other researchers • Collaborate with other researchers on the development of research proposals • Publish and present work at relevant conferences and in scientific journals Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Salary Range: $139,900 - $280,600 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential. Qualifications We Require: • PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development. Qualifications We Desire: The ideal R&D S&E Materials Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition posses the following: • Experience in a research and development environment • Experience with materials characterization techniques • Experience working on teams consisting of multidisciplinary and multi-disciplinary experimentalists, modelers, and theorists with a common goal • Effective interpersonal skills for giving presentations, preparing reports, writing articles, and explaining the important aspects of technical work to customers Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience: • Extensive experience in cleanroom fabrication, tools, techniques and materials • Experience with electronic and photonic device fabrication, testing, and characterization • A strong publication record in high impact journals • A broad research experience across disciplines • Experience writing research proposals • Experience working as part of multidisciplinary teams About Our Team: The Materials Physics department performs fundamental research on the structure and properties of materials to support programs in energy research, device physics, materials reliability, and national security. Specific activities include experimental and modeling studies of surface electronic structure and surface atomic structure and dynamics of metals, oxides, low dimensional semiconductors, and adsorbates; atomic-scale structure and composition analysis of metals, semiconductors, and composites; electrical and optical properties of low-dimensional semiconductors and optoelectronic devices; and the structural and electrochemical characterization of solid-state ionic materials. The Department supports internal and external sponsors and government agencies that seek solutions to problems of fundamental scientific inquiry, energy sustainability, and national defense. Posting Duration: This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time. Security Clearance: This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted. Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
