Job description

ABOUT 9AMHEALTH 9amHealth is an AI-enabled virtual specialty care platform focused on managing high-cost chronic conditions at scale. The company partners with employers, health plans, and pharmacy benefit managers to deliver comprehensive, cost-effective medical care for individuals living with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Members receive access to specialized clinicians, including endocrinologists, obesity medicine specialists, and clinical pharmacists, at-home lab testing, prescription medications, and lifestyle support. 9amHealth was founded in 2021 and is backed by leading healthcare investors like Define Ventures, SemperVirens, 7Wire Ventures, and The Cigna Group Ventures. THE ROLE We're looking for a highly skilled Senior Product Engineer who is excited about building in an AI native, agentic world. This is not a traditional frontend or backend role! It’s for engineers who: - use AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) as a force multiplier, - think in terms of systems, workflows, and agents, not just endpoints and screens, - can turn ambiguous product problems into working, production-ready solutions, - want to help evolve our platform toward an agent-driven future in healthcare. You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to re-imagine how our systems are built, extended, and operated as AI becomes a first class part of the development process. WHAT YOU’LL DO Build AI Native Systems - Design, implement, and operate backend and fullstack systems that incorporate LLMs, tools, and agents as core components; - Build agentic workflows (multi-step, tool using, stateful systems) that solve real product and operational problems; - Integrate LLMs safely and reliably into production systems, with attention to observability, cost, and failure modes. Engineer with AI as a Partner - Use modern AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code/Codex/Pi/Cursor) to accelerate development, refactoring, and exploration; - Set patterns and standards for how AI is used in day to day engineering work; - Help the team move faster without sacrificing quality or clarity. Product Driven Engineering - Collaborate closely with Product Management, Design, and other stakeholders to shape solutions, not just implement specs; - Translate high level goals into technical architecture and execution plans; - Contribute to roadmap discussions with a strong systems and platform perspective. Own the System End to End - Design APIs, services, and data models (primarily backend leaning); - Ensure reliability, security, privacy, and scalability in a regulated healthcare context; - Operate and observe the system’s behaviour in the real world; - Improve developer experience and internal tooling where it unlocks leverage. WHAT YOU’LL NEED Required - 7+ years of experience as a Software Engineer, with strong knowledge of major parts of our tech stack (AWS, Java, Typescript) - Strong experience in building with LLMs in production, not just prototypes - Clear enthusiasm for the capabilities and opportunities of AI and agentic systems - Strong system design skills and comfort working in ambiguous problem spaces - Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders Strong Plus - Experience designing, building, and operating long running workflows, background jobs, or distributed systems - Familiarity with healthcare, regulated products, or safety critical systems - Startup or fast moving product environment experience What We Care About (Beyond the Resume) - You’re curious and opinionated about where software development is going - You ship and you iterate based on real world feedback - You don’t wait for perfect specs; you help create them! - You see AI as a new abstraction layer, not a gimmick WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT AT 9AMHEALTH At 9amHealth, you'll join the exciting environment of a startup with the stability of highly experienced founders that have successfully built a business from scratch. We foster a collaborative learning mindset and a passion for improvement. You'll work with a brand-new product alongside a small, flexible team of people eager to shape technology, infrastructure, and culture. Our team members are spread across the globe, with physical sites in San Diego, California, and Vienna, Austria, but we value your culture regardless of where you work. Additionally, we provide a professional development budget and support continuing education, empowering our team to grow alongside the company. Team members have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on chronic disease management and patient outcomes while contributing to a collaborative, mission driven culture focused on improving healthcare accessibility and affordability. Full-Time/W2 Positions Only: We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, along with flexible PTO and work from home options. OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Diabetes disproportionately impacts BIPOC (black, indigenous, and people of color) 9am.health communities. We are committed to creating a workforce that reflects our patients and creating a positive healthcare experience for them. We welcome applications from people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, members of ethnic minorities, and foreign born residents.
