Job description

About Us At Intramotev, we are dedicated to revolutionizing the freight industry by liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles today, with a roadmap toward fully autonomous operations, to transform freight logistics and bring innovation to the rail network. Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to promoting industrial revitalization, saving lives, and minimizing the environmental impact of trucking and transportation. We actively foster a work environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful, and inclusive, with great opportunities for professional growth. Find your future with us. Role Overview We are seeking a Staff Safety Systems Engineer to build our system safety program. This is the first dedicated safety hire at Intramotev, reporting directly to the Chief Engineer, with a mandate to grow our safety-critical engineering practice from an early-stage draft into a production-ready program. As a senior individual contributor, you will be the senior technical owner for systems safety and safety-critical software compliance — qualifying our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles for today's freight operations while developing the safety case for our autonomous future. The FRA/AAR waiver pathway is our primary near-term regulatory focus, and EN 5012x familiarity is valuable for our European engagements. This is a full-time, 100% in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work alongside our hardware, software, controls, and systems engineering teams and engage in occasional domestic and international travel for integration testing, demonstrations, and customer site visits. Key Responsibilities • Establish the Safety Program: Build Intramotev's system safety program from an early-stage draft into a production-grade practice, defining processes, standards, documentation, and review cadences. • Own Systems Safety: Serve as the senior technical owner for systems safety and safety-critical software compliance, collaborating across hardware, software, controls, and systems engineering teams. • Safety-Critical Software Compliance: Lead safety review, hazard analysis, and compliance verification of onboard safety-critical software in accordance with rail industry standards. • Safety & Reliability Analysis: Drive and execute Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), hazard analyses, and reliability predictions to identify risks and define mitigation strategies. • Regulatory Pathway: Drive the FRA/AAR waiver process for our self-propelled vehicles and develop the safety case supporting our progression toward autonomous operations. • Technology Qualification: Define the processes and test methodologies required to qualify novel battery-electric and autonomous rail technologies for freight operations. • Design Influence: Influence system and software architecture from the earliest stages, translating safety requirements into actionable designs for hardware and software teams. • Testing & Lifecycle Support: Coordinate and execute test plans validating integrated system performance against operational safety cases and regulatory expectations, and support fielded systems on safety-critical and reliability issues from concept through deployment. Compensation & Benefits Base salary: $135,000–$175,000 Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including: • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options. • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off. • Equity: Full-time employees receive equity in the company. • Parental leave: New parents receive paid time off to spend quality time with their family. About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience) • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Science. • 7 or more years of systems or safety engineering experience in a safety-critical, highly regulated environment (e.g., aerospace, rail, medical devices, defense, or automotive). • Demonstrated experience performing and owning system-level safety analyses (e.g., FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis, and reliability predictions) — not just contributing to them. • Familiarity with safety-critical software architectures, software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes, and software verification tools. • Experience supporting regulatory submissions, certifications, or safety cases in a regulated industry. • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches. • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor. • Fluent in both written and verbal English. • U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided). Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience) Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below: • Direct experience qualifying or certifying systems in the rail transit or freight rail industry, including FRA regulations (49 CFR Parts 200–299) and AAR standards. • Experience leading a regulatory submission, certification, or safety case end-to-end. • Safety-critical software and functional safety standards (e.g., EN 50128, EN 50126, ISO 26262, or DO-178C). • Familiarity with EU rail safety frameworks for cross-market system qualification. • Knowledge of freight rail systems, operations, and legacy mechanical/pneumatic configurations. • Exposure to autonomous-vehicle safety cases or driverless-operation regulatory pathways. • Experience in directly applicable industry or projects, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, or Unmanned Systems. • Experience working in Agile environments for hardware and software development. Typical Education and Experience Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 7 or more years' related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience. Relocation This position offers relocation assistance based on candidate eligibility. Equal Opportunity Employer Intramotev is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic factors, military/veteran status or other characteristics protected by law. Closing If you're passionate about systems safety and eager to lead the charge in autonomous rail technology, we'd love to hear from you!
