Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next. The Member Experience Client Foundations team (MXCF) is responsible for building the server-driven UI (SDUI) architecture and tooling used to power the member user experience across Netflix’s iOS, Android, TV and Web client streaming applications. The team is responsible for working closely with our server foundational partners on this SDUI architecture to ensure that we’re building holistic solutions which balance client architectural considerations across all four client platforms, alongside our server partner’s distributed system concerns. Allowing us to deliver a flexible, scalable SDUI platform on which both our client & server product teams can deliver the innovative member experiences which Netflix sets the industry standard for. MXCF is a foundational team. We don’t build product experiences directly. We build architecture and tooling which empowers product engineers (our customers), to build great product experiences, efficiently and reliably. We’re currently working to evolve our SDUI architecture’s capabilities to support: • A flexible spectrum of server-driven rendering : From coarse-grained control through to fine grained UI control; or none at all, based on product needs. • Pushing UI updates to the client both for exceedingly high-scale needs (simultaneous concurrent updates for live events), as well user experience updates at lower scale. • Dynamically modify the UI in response to the user’s session interaction and needs. • Efficiently support the increasingly wide variety of content types and business verticals (shows, movies, games, ads, live, acquisition) which Netflix supports. • Integrating generative AI into the ecosystem to increase efficiency for product engineers to utilize the platform. The Role This role will be focused on Android, requiring expertise with Android UI architecture and frameworks. However, we believe strong engineering aptitude transcends stacks, and providing the opportunity to explore UI development on other platforms is a unique aspect of this role. We’re currently building solutions with Kotlin/Compose on Android, and use GraphQL as our shared data access technology. We use Swift on iOS and JavaScript/TypeScript on TV & Web. In this role you’ll: • Architect and build maintainable, performant Android client code with effective documentation that can be leveraged by Android developers across Netflix • Define and drive best practices that ensure consistency, reliability, and simplicity in a high-commit-volume codebase • Leverage modern technologies such as Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Circuit, and Dagger/Hilt, alongside GraphQL, to deliver scalable, maintainable solutions for our shared SDUI architecture • Develop code for testability and write automated tests (JVM Unit, Espresso, Paparazzi) to uphold product quality • Keep a pulse on cutting-edge Android technologies and software engineering practices, modernizing the codebase to accelerate innovation velocity • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across client and server teams to define and deliver on our framework and architecture vision • Mentor and grow less-experienced Android engineers • Influence our framework and architecture roadmaps, and drive forward-looking technical solutions with minimal supervision • Diverse and inclusive teams are strong teams. We encourage those with varied identities, backgrounds, and experiences to apply. We believe that creating a sense of belonging allows us to be our best selves, which in turn helps us produce our best work. We rely on our unique individual strengths to help each other grow. • We have a distributed team across the US, while trying to maintain some pacific time overlap. With some teammates working remotely from the east coast, and some co-located in the Los Gatos, CA office. The team is committed to being ‘remote-inclusive’ and believe it’s about the work you do, and the relationships you build. Where you can best do that from is up to you. People who do well on the team are self-motivated engineers with a passion for building solutions rooted in business and customer needs. Analytical and technical skills form a solid foundation. But more importantly, we look for engineers who understand that there are rarely any absolutes when it comes to technology. The curiosity to engage in discussions about use cases, prioritization and technical challenges with colleagues, while thoughtfully weighing trade-offs across multiple solutions is a skill we value highly. As is the desire to continually learn, grow and help your colleagues do the same. All of this, so that Netflix members can immerse themselves in the stories they care about, on the devices they love, from whichever part of the world they call home. Without the technology behind it all ever getting in the way. If this resonates with you, we’d love to talk! What Sets You Apart: • You have a deep understanding of the technical landscape of Android development and can introduce new paradigms and practices • You're comfortable identifying opportunities and driving forward-looking technical solutions or roadmaps with little supervision • You take a practical approach to problem-solving that considers trade-offs and avoids over-engineering, balancing business, user, and architectural needs • You have a strong track record of leading projects and delivering results, with excellent project management and estimation skills • You have an appreciation for diverse perspectives and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. • You understand that it is really about solving problems. A language, framework or library choice is just a means to an end. • You've built a track record of weaving GenAI and agentic workflows into your team's engineering practice, not just using the tools yourself, but changing how the SDLC works for the people around you What’s Different About Us: Scale, Impact Hundreds of Engineers : You’ll be improving UI development velocity for over 100 engineers... Millions of Users : creating best-in-class streaming UIs used by over 100M users... Thousands of Devices : across a wide spectrum of devices... Globally : in almost every country in the world. Unique Technical Challenges We build framework solutions (libraries, architectures, and tools) which are flexible enough to span a variety of product use cases, across a varied client, server and network performance landscape, all while being easy to use for the engineers we support. The breadth of problems we work on provide a great career opportunity to explore different technical areas and deepen your expertise. Collaboration and Communication It’s not all about the tech. We highly value the skills required to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively. Responsibility and Ownership We believe in hiring responsible engineers, providing them with the business context they need, and then freeing them up to own their project’s scope, design, trade-offs, and figure out the implementation details. Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $388,000.00 - $558,000.00. This compensation range will vary based on location. Netflix provides comprehensive benefits including Health Plans, Mental Health support, a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer match, Stock Option Program, Disability Programs, Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts, Family-forming benefits, and Life and Serious Injury Benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off. See more details about our Benefits here . Netflix is a unique culture and environment. Learn more here .
