Job description

Who We Are: At Bandwidth , we shape how the world connects. We're the global communications software company and Tier 1 network operator with global reach. The voice, messaging, and emergency services infrastructure behind the brands and apps you use every day. Because we own the network we build on, the problems you'll solve here are bigger, more complex, and more impactful. And as communications shifts to AI, we're the infrastructure layer making it possible. We call ourselves BANDmates because building something this big takes collaboration, different perspectives, and the freedom to bring your authentic self to the table. We're experts who speak like humans. Ready to build what's next? #JoinTheBand What We Are Looking For: As a Senior Software Engineer (Number Porting team), you'll help make it as easy as possible for customers to port phone numbers in and out of Bandwidth. The team works with vendors and internal operations teams to streamline that process, and we're also building an AI agent that helps customers submit port requests and diagnose issues if they come up. We're looking for someone who leads by example, takes deep ownership of what they build, moves fast without cutting corners, and is genuinely excited by the challenge of designing and scaling distributed systems that millions of people depend on. You are the right candidate if you thrive with mission-focus, enjoy solving complex problems at scale, and are energized — working in an environment where AI is woven into how great engineers work every day. We don't treat AI as a future capability. It's how we build now, and we want teammates who feel the same way. What You'll Do: Own your services end-to-end — from design and development to testing, operations, and production monitoring. You build it, you run it. Create and maintain REST APIs (Java/Spring), customer-facing dashboards (React), and the cloud infrastructure (AWS) that powers the Numbers platform and number porting. Integrate with third parties that support our porting processes Help build our porting agent , which helps customers submit port requests and diagnose issues if they come up. Lead solutions from start to finish , collaborating across teams to iteratively ship value aligned to customer and business needs. Identify and solve scaling problems through both application development and infrastructure optimization, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance. Mentor junior and mid-level developers through productive code reviews, thoughtful design discussions, and by modeling the engineering standards you want to see on the team. Partner with product owners and stakeholders to translate requirements into well-designed, maintainable solutions — contributing to feature sizing and technical roadmap discussions. Use AI as a core engineering tool — not occasionally, but daily. You reach for AI assistants in code generation, design exploration, debugging, and documentation, and you do it with the confidence of someone who knows the fundamentals well enough to lead the AI, not just follow it. Drive continuous improvement — look critically at what we're building and how we're building it, and originate ideas that advance both our craft and our platform's reliability. What You Need: You are the right candidate if… You have 5+ years of experience building web services in a modern programming language (Java strongly preferred; C# or Go also welcome) You have built and deployed applications for the cloud, preferably AWS You have a solid understanding of network protocols, HTTP, and REST API design You have experience designing and working with distributed systems You have experience with relational and non-relational database systems You have experience with scale, performance optimization , and building for fault tolerance You have experience with test automation patterns and frameworks You bring a continuous learning mindset — the tooling, the patterns, and the pace of change don't unsettle you, they excite you. You adapt quickly, absorb new concepts eagerly, and bring others along with you. You are genuinely enthusiastic about AI — you follow the space, you experiment, and you have a point of view on where engineering is heading You actively use AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) in all parts of the software development lifecycle and review AI-generated code with the same rigor as human-written code You hold a 4-year technical degree or equivalent experience Bonus Points: It would be really great if you also… Have hands-on experience with AWS (ECS, EKS, API Gateway, S3, SQS, Lambda, Aurora) Have some experience with front-end development , preferably React Have experience with messaging brokers (Kafka, ActiveMQ) Have experience building agentic systems, for example with frameworks like Strands, in a professional context Have telecom or number porting domain knowledge The Whole Person Promise: At Bandwidth, we’re pretty proud of our corporate culture, which is rooted in our “Whole Person Promise.” We promise all employees that they can have meaningful work AND a full life, and we provide a work environment geared toward enriching your body, mind, and spirit. How do we do that? Well… 100% company-paid Medical, Vision, & Dental coverage for you and your family with low deductibles and low out-of-pocket expenses. All new hires receive four weeks of PTO. PTO Embargo. When you take time off (of any kind!) you’re embargoed from working. Bandmates and managers are not allowed to interrupt your PTO – not even with email. Additional PTO can be earned throughout the year through volunteer hours and Bandwidth challenges. “Mahalo moments” program grants additional time off for life’s most important moments like graduations, buying a first home, getting married, wedding anniversaries (every five years), and the birth of a grandchild. 90-Minute Workout Lunches and unlimited meetings with our very own nutritionist. Are you excited about the position and its responsibilities, but not sure if you’re 100% qualified? Do you feel you can work to help us crush the mission? If you answered ‘yes’ to both of these questions, we encourage you to apply! You won’t want to miss the opportunity to be a part of the BAND. Applicant Privacy Notice
