Job description
At R1, we’re transforming how healthcare works by combining nearly two decades of revenue cycle expertise with advanced technology, including analytics, AI, intelligent automation and workflow orchestration. We pair that technology with the irreplaceable expertise of our people to help hospitals, health systems and medical groups improve financial performance, simplify administrative complexity and create better experiences for patients and providers.
All Together Better defines our culture and the way we work. We’re a diverse, global team united by a shared mission to make healthcare work better for all. Across technology, operations and support functions, our people bring deep expertise, empathy and ingenuity to the work we do. Here, collaboration fuels progress, adaptability sparks innovation and every voice can help shape what’s next for R1 and the future of healthcare.
About R37
R37 is R1’s AI innovation lab, building technology to transform healthcare.
Our flagship platform, Phare OS, uses AI and automation to improve critical pre-bill workflows, including authorization, utilization management, documentation and coding. By identifying and resolving issues before claims are submitted, Phare OS helps prevent denials, improve reimbursement and move revenue cycle work upstream.
What makes R37 different is the opportunity to build advanced AI at real-world scale. R1 works across 95 of the top 100 U.S. health systems, giving R37 access to the data, workflows and reach needed to make an immediate impact:
180M claims
550M patient encounters
1.2B workflow actions and outcomes annually
This is startup-level ownership with enterprise-level impact. You’ll build technology that moves from idea to real healthcare environments, solving complex problems at scale and changing how healthcare works.
Here s what you will experience working as a Senior Software Engineer:
Lead the development and sustainment of secure, scalable, highly available production software, using AI coding agents as the primary means of implementation across the database, service, and application layers.
Orchestrate multiple agents and parallel workstreams by decomposing complex features into well-scoped tasks with clear context, constraints, acceptance criteria, and verification plans.
Design and maintain the team s agentic development environment, including project context files, reusable prompts, custom commands, hooks, MCP server integrations, and CI/CD guardrails.
Set the standard for AI-generated code by validating output through automated testing, code review, security checks, performance measurement, and compliance with HIPAA and company data-handling requirements.
Lead integrations with third-party AI platforms, LLM APIs, and AI-powered IVR or conversational voice solutions while partnering with Product Management, architects, and engineers to deliver intuitive, reliable products.
Advance engineering practices across automation, auditability, infrastructure and policy as code, automated testing, data modeling, API development, query performance, concurrency control, and modern cloud-native delivery.
Mentor junior engineers in prompting, context engineering, architecture, and critical review of AI output, while serving as a trusted subject-matter expert across diverse technical and business teams.
Required Skills:
7-10 years of software engineering experience, including significant production use of AI-assisted or agentic development, and a bachelor s degree or equivalent experience.
Expert-level experience delivering production software through AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools, including multi-agent and parallel workflows.
Advanced prompting and context-engineering skills, with the ability to design reliable workflows around model strengths, limitations, and failure modes and to verify AI-generated output against tests and source material.
Experience configuring agent tooling, including MCP servers, custom commands, hooks, rules or project context files, and CI integration of agents.
Expert code-reading and architecture-review skills across the full stack, including object-oriented development in C#, Java, or TypeScript and modern JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular.
Experience with APIs and web service standards, relational and non-relational databases, data modeling, distributed or message-driven systems, automated testing, version control, Agile delivery, and CI/CD.
Strong cloud architecture, debugging, technical documentation, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, influence stakeholders, mentor others, and explain complex solutions clearly.
Experience applying secure development and data-handling practices in environments involving confidential or regulated information.
For this US-based position, the base pay range is $101,100.00 - $206,802.61 per year . Individual pay is determined by role, level, location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
This job is eligible to participate in our annual bonus plan at a target of 10.00%
