Job description

This is a fully remote, direct-hire position with our client. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US without current or future sponsorship. We're partnering with a fully remote, fast-growing software company to hire a Staff Product Engineer. This is a new, highly visible role where you'll work directly with the CTO, product leadership, and a distributed engineering team to shape architecture, scale the product, and grow the company's internal engineering capabilities. You'll stay hands-on while setting technical standards, mentoring engineers, and raising the bar for the team around you. The culture values action, thoughtful experimentation, candid feedback, and world-class work. The team builds using Shape Up rather than Agile or Scrum. Work is organized around clearly defined problems instead of sprint ceremonies, and engineers are trusted to find the best path forward, adapt as they learn, and own the outcome. Tech Environment • Typescript • React • Next.js • Node.js • PostgreSQL • Full-stack monolith architecture • Automated preview deployments with mocked services and isolated, production-like data • Event-driven and asynchronous systems • Workflow tools such as Kafka, Temporal, or Inngest • AI-assisted development and workflow automation Responsibilities Architecture and Technical Direction • Own the architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems across the full stack. • Partner with the CTO to define and execute the long-term engineering strategy. • Translate business strategy into practical technical roadmaps, and respectfully push back when there's a better approach. • Guide data modeling and system design with a focus on scalability, security, and long-term maintainability. Reliability and Automation • Strengthen reliability through monitoring, service-level objectives, incident response, and blameless postmortems with measurable follow-through. • Turn manual work (deployments, data fixes, reporting, reviews, documentation) into automated, scalable systems. • Ensure systems meet security, privacy, audit, and compliance requirements for sensitive data. Leadership • Set engineering standards and lead design and code reviews without becoming a bottleneck. • Mentor engineers to grow their technical judgment, ownership, and problem-solving. • Take on cross-functional technical challenges that lack a clear owner and drive them to completion. • Build alignment across U.S. and international engineering teams, and represent engineering with product and executive leadership. Qualifications • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time as a Staff, Principal, or equivalent technical leader. • Experience in a startup or growth-stage environment where you owned outcomes, not just assigned work. • Deep expertise in TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, and PostgreSQL. • Strong database fundamentals: schema design, transactions, locking, query performance, and data integrity. • A track record of designing and supporting business-critical systems such as workflows, integrations, financial transactions, or sensitive data. • Experience making major architecture decisions and clearly explaining the trade-offs. • Experience scaling a product as customers, markets, and requirements expand. • Solid grounding in reliability, monitoring, and incident response. • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex ideas to non-technical audiences. • A thoughtful approach to AI tools that boosts productivity without sacrificing ownership, oversight, or quality. • Comfort operating with high autonomy and ownership outside a traditional Agile or Scrum framework. Nice to Have Skills • Event-driven, asynchronous, or workflow-heavy systems (Kafka, Temporal, Inngest, or similar) • Scaling software across multiple markets or jurisdictions • Regulated or compliance-focused environments • Helping an organization move from outsourced engineering to a strong in-house team • Building internal platforms or developer productivity tooling • Prior experience with Shape Up Our Vetting Process At Emergent Staffing, we work hard to find the software engineers who are the right fit for our clients. Here are the steps of our vetting process for this position: • Application (5 minutes) • Online Assessment (40-60 minutes) • Initial Video Interview (30-45 minutes) • Client On-site Interview (60 minutes) • Job Offer! #EmergentStaffing #IND22
