Job description

FRINGE · REMOTE (US), OFFICE IN RICHMOND, VA · FULL-TIME Accounting Operations Manager About Fringe Fringe is a fast-growing HR technology company based in Virginia. Founded in late 2018, Fringe is the first ever platform for personalized lifestyle benefits. We are a relentlessly people-focused group revolutionizing the way employers care for their people in the benefits space. We're a supportive, down-to-earth team, fully committed to the belief that relationships fuel outstanding client experience. We built Fringe to give companies a better way to show love and care to their people. Because we believe it's the people who really matter. Companies exist because of the products and services they offer, but we believe the people within them should come first. At Fringe, this is the way we live. Practically, this means we hire people who care about their teammates just as much as (if not more than) themselves. We hire people who are genuine, humble, willing to learn, ready to teach, able to adapt, flex, collaborate, celebrate each other, win together and lose together. We're a startup, and that means we must be a courageous group. We solve problems all day, but we also mess up sometimes. We extend grace to each other, and we try again. We aren't looking for perfect people. We're looking for people who own their faults, play to their strengths, and have the courage to simply be the same person all the time. If that doesn't sound like your cup of cold brew, no hard feelings. But that's exactly who we are and what you can expect when you work at Fringe. About the role Fringe's employee experience platform combines a B2B model with a B2B2C marketplace. Employers pay us a subscription and fund lifestyle benefits, swag, recognition, and gifting for their people. Employees spend those dollars as points in our marketplace across hundreds of vendors. We pay the vendors. That means we run a SaaS business and a marketplace at the same time, with deferred revenue, points liabilities, and a cohort of channel partners layered on top. If you find that combination energizing rather than intimidating, keep reading. You'll be the in-house finance and accounting leader at Fringe and will take over a well-built set of documented, repeatable close processes. You will own the monthly close and everything that comes out of it, run our financial operations end to end, and be the person everyone at Fringe comes to with a finance question. You'll report to the COO and work closely with Operations and Product. This is a role for a professional who wants to jump into a startup environment and own a whole function. It is a lot of hats and it is a rare amount of scope, ownership, and visibility.. What you'll own Monthly close and reporting • Run the full monthly close: close calendar, journal entries, reconciliations, and sign-off across subscription and marketplace revenue. • Own revenue recognition under ASC 606 for a hybrid model: PEPM subscriptions, employer-funded marketplace spend, gifting, and partner revenue share. • Maintain deferred revenue and points liability roll-forwards and keep the balance sheet clean and explainable. • Produce internal and external monthly reporting: variance and flux analysis and the executive dashboard. • Support the annual audit and tax processes with our outside CPA firms. Financial operations • Treasury and cash: cash forecast, bank relationships, managing operating balances, and executing outbound wires and ACH payments with proper approvals. • Accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections in partnership with Customer Success: customer invoicing and billing accuracy, vendor payment runs, and chasing what’s past due. • Payroll, working with People Operations and our PEO. • Review all accounting work and ensure a high standard. Cross-functional partner • Be the main point of contact for all things finance internally: contract terms, vendor questions, funding schedules, commission plans, budgets. • Spot the process that's slowing us down and fix it. Drive operational improvement rather than waiting for someone to ask. Who you are • High agency and a bias for action. You'd rather ship a good answer today than a perfect one next week, and you know which situations call for which. • Comfortable being the only finance person in the room, and honest about when you need a second set of eyes. • A clear communicator who can explain a flux to the CEO, a payment term to a salesperson, and a rev rec judgment to an auditor. • Curious about how the business actually works, not just how it's booked. • Someone who owns mistakes, extends grace, and shows up as the same person every day. That's who we are. Need to haves • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field. • 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience. • Deep understanding of GAAP, especially ASC 606. • Hands-on experience running monthly close procedures and meeting internal and external reporting requirements. • Familiarity with an accounting tech stack and a spreadsheet wizard (Quickbooks, Tabs, Anrok, FloQast, Salesforce, Claude, Google Sheets) • Strong leadership, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to drive operational improvement. • Quality communicator, written and verbal. Nice to haves • Experience at Big 4, high-growth startup, management consulting, or investment banking. • CPA (active or license applicant). • SaaS or marketplace experience, especially with deferred revenue, points or stored value, or multi-party revenue. What we offer Fringe is remote-first, with an office in Richmond, VA for those who want it. Beyond the scope of the role itself, here's what comes with it: • Competitive salary. • Employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for individuals and families. • 3% company match on 401(k) retirement contributions. • Unlimited paid time off (2 weeks minimum per year), plus paid holidays, volunteer days, quarterly wellbeing days off, and parental leave. • Employee stock options so you can participate in our success. • Your choice of monthly Fringe lifestyle benefits on our own marketplace. We use what we build. • Free access to DoorDash DashPass & Cloverleaf for personal and team development • Company-sponsored team events, in person and virtually.
