Job description

About Rivian Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract. As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations. Role Summary Rivian internships are experiences optimized for student candidates. To be eligible, you must be an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited program during the internship term with an expected graduation date between December 2027 and 2029. Rivian's Internship Program requires active student enrollment. Information regarding your expected degree completion date is collected solely to verify eligibility and determine your availability for future full-time opportunities. Rivian is an equal opportunity employer and does not use graduation dates to determine the age of applicants or as a basis for discriminatory hiring decisions. If you are not pursuing a degree, please see our full time positions on our Rivian careers site. Note that if your university has specific requirements for internship programs, it is your responsibility to fulfill those requirements. Our Spring Co-Op program runs from Jan - Aug, 2027. In order to be considered for this role, you must be available to work full time (40 hours per week), onsite, for the entire duration. If you are unable to work during the spring semester, please apply to our Summer Internship Program. No Visa Sponsorship Join Rivian’s AI platform team to build sophisticated, production-grade AI systems and reusable capabilities used across the company. This is a highly technical, high-ownership internship for exceptional candidates who want to advance how Rivian designs, engineers, and delivers its products through LLMs, agentic AI, and machine learning. Responsibilities Design and implement sophisticated agentic systems that combine LLMs, tool use, retrieval, memory, and structured reasoning. Develop multi-agent and long-running workflows using LangGraph, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or equivalent custom architectures. Build advanced retrieval and knowledge systems using embeddings, vector databases, semantic search, and knowledge graphs. Create reusable platform components for agent orchestration, context management, evaluation, observability, and human oversight. Own meaningful technical deliverables from problem formulation and architecture through implementation, testing, and demonstration. Develop rigorous evaluation frameworks, golden datasets, automated metrics, and regression tests for nondeterministic AI systems. Integrate AI applications with enterprise APIs, databases, data platforms, and internal software systems. Perform systematic failure analysis and improve system accuracy, reliability, latency, scalability, and maintainability. Research emerging techniques in generative AI, agentic systems, and machine learning, then validate their value through disciplined experimentation. Collaborate with experienced AI engineers, researchers, product teams, and technical domain experts across Rivian. Qualifications Must be currently pursuing a masters or PhD degree at an accredited university. Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field. Exceptional Python programming ability and strong software-engineering fundamentals. Demonstrated experience building technically substantial AI/ML or LLM applications beyond introductory coursework. Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, machine learning, statistics, and experimental design. Ability to independently navigate complex, ambiguous technical problems and deliver high-quality results. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly.
