Job description

Why Numeric Every business runs on accounting, but the systems underneath it were built for a different era. Today’s ERPs don’t store a company’s financial data. They store a diluted copy of it. Every contract, lease, and invoice gets flattened into a journal entry, and the context that made it meaningful is thrown away. That’s why accounting teams spend every month re-checking numbers, stitching together spreadsheets, and waiting on engineering, and why AI struggles to do real accounting work. Accounting doesn’t have a reporting problem. It has a data problem. Enter Numeric: the data platform finance teams run on. We started with the month-end close, where the data problem hurts most, and hundreds of finance teams now run their close on Numeric. That work led us to rebuild the system of record itself. In September 2026 we launched the Financial Data Platform (FDP), a platform built for the agent era. Instead of a journal entry, the real business object enters the system and the accounting is derived from it. Every number is traceable to its source, reporting works on any dimension, and accountants and AI agents finally have enough context to work together. While others bolted AI features onto the old data model, we built a new one. We have a growing base of customers who love our product, including Anthropic, Plaid, Brex, Betterment, Wealthfront, and Asana. We’ve raised $89M from top-tier investors including IVP, Menlo Ventures, Founders Fund, and 8VC, along with founders and executives from Ramp, Segment, and other category-defining companies. We’re hybrid but in-office first, with teams in New York, San Francisco, and London, and we just shipped the product that will define our next decade. There’s never been a better time to join. The Role We are addressing these problems at their root by building the infrastructure and product experiences to ingest events, transform them, match value movement, project interpretations, and report against our unified graph of financial data. We’re applying principles of software engineering and data systems to scale accounting. We tackle the hard problems. Accounting does not need more duct tape. We’ve rethought the field—its primitives, assumptions, and practices—while staying grounded by working closely with our customers. As engineers, we do our homework. We study the domain and talk to our users, and by doing so we earn the right to bring a fresh perspective to the problem of financial data. We’re turning accountants into engineers, and AI is a critical piece of that story. This role will lead the development of customer-facing AI experiences that make our platform usable, delightful, automated, auditable, and trusted. You’ll be responsible for building both user-facing features and the horizontal foundations we use to bring unified, trustworthy AI automation and experiences to our users. You’ll make strategic decisions and build the loops for how we measure and improve the efficacy of our AI product experiences. You might be a fit if… You’re curious by nature. You’re a generalist with a desire to work at the cutting edge of AI tech, and to build novel interaction patterns for a complex domain. You have an instinct to deeply understand your users and the problems they deal with. You like to see things for yourself. What you need - Generalist fullstack skills: experience with backend development and web development frameworks - You have experience shipping greenfield projects - You’ve built projects with modern AI (bonus points for business-facing contexts) Bonus points for… - Work history in a relevant technical area: AI research, AI infra, or design HOW WE WORK This role is hybrid in San Francisco, in-office first. As an engineer at Numeric you will learn the domain, meet your users, and exercise substantial creativity and agency over product direction. You'll work with a high-pace, high-integrity team that loves collaboration. We believe the best company is the one with the best ICs and we’ve built a culture to maximize great work. We believe great product & engineering come from a desire to win, a deep care for the craft, and a pragmatism in shipping for overall impact. As engineers we ground our work in our understanding of the users, the domain, and the goals for our organization. We strongly believe we will only be successful if everyone on the team is anchored in our following set of core principles: - Own the Outcome: We own our results. We typically hire builders and give them large mandates with high-trust. Engineers are responsible not just for code, but for ensuring the product is solving the end problems of the users. - Brick by Brick: To win, our team needs to show up and execute in each domain every day. - Love the Game: We focus on the craft and a deep sense of giving a f*ck. We’re building a company full of people who are equally engaged and motivated. - Earn the right: Our ability to rethink how things are done depends on the trust and reputation we build by shipping quality products and improving the lives of our users. - SALY: We refuse to accept “Same As Last Year.” We bring fresh eyes to a stagnated and underserved domain. We’re driven by a first-principles approach to building better solutions. Read some of our thoughts on engineering and company-building here. numeric.substack.com
