Job description

About Us: Here at Ambience, we never set out to be just another scribe. We’re building the AI intelligence platform that restores humanity to healthcare and drives meaningful ROI for health systems across the country. Our technology helps providers focus on delivering great care by removing the administrative burden that pulls them away from patients and away from their most impactful work. Ambience delivers real-time coding-aware documentation and clinical workflow support across ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings at the top health systems in North America. Our teams operate relentlessly with extreme ownership to build the best solutions for our health system partners. We value candor, positivity and deep thought — and we expect a lot from each other because we know the problems we’re solving truly matter. Ambience was ranked #1 for Improving the Clinician Experience in the KLAS Research Emerging Solutions Top 20 Report, recognized by Fast Company as one of the Next Big Things in Tech, named one of the best AI companies in healthcare by Inc., and selected as a LinkedIn Top Startup in 2024 and 2025. We’re backed by Oak HC/FT, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), OpenAI Startup Fund, and Kleiner Perkins — and we’re just getting started. The Role: As a Staff Software Engineer on the AI Platform team, you will design, build, and maintain the core infrastructure that empowers healthcare providers who use our platform every single day as they care for patients. As an OpenAI portfolio company, you will be surrounded by the leading minds in AI and exposed to the latest advancements in our field. In the first 6 months, you’ll be responsible for setting up the foundations for long term success, investing in platform observability, reliability, and scalability. As a technical leader, you’ll be responsible for the entire lifecycle of major technical initiatives in our AI stack--from system design to deploying the code you've written. Our engineering roles are hybrid — working onsite at our San Francisco office three days per week. What You’ll Own: - Staff product engineers at Ambience drive new product areas, accelerate research and development of trustworthy AI for healthcare, and raise the standard of quality for other engineers and agents across the company. - Launch product areas: collaborate closely with go to market and research and development to bring new products to market. Recent launches include: longitudinal chart review to help clinicians prepare before visits, speech driven actions to reduce EHR burden, and our inpatient platform to power better care in hospitals. - Scale product areas: own the quality and velocity posture for a cluster of products and features. Can include enhancing products so they can expand across the entire health system, enabling rapid improvement of model-powered workflows, architecting systems so that they can serve the most complex patients at any time of day. Who You Are: - 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years architecting backend systems - Able to work in person at our San Francisco office at least three days per week - Track record of leading cross-team initiatives, scaling products and systems, and driving product outcomes - Skilled in TypeScript, Python, Go or other similar programming languages - Experience with React or similar frameworks helpful Staff product engineers are expected to have a strong foundation in: - System Design: Architect through requirements gathering, API design, database design, distributed systems, security best practices, and eliminating bottlenecks across network, compute, and storage layers to build excellent products that scale. - Operational Excellence: Apply testing, observability, incident resolution, retrospectives, and on-call experience to provide a high quality experience for clincians and patients and maintain a high pace of product improvement. - Project Planning: Deliver complex individual launches, parallel efforts across R&D teams, or company-wide initiatives by making and communicating good decisions on scope and timelines. To drive product success, staff product engineers often bring strengths in one or more of these areas: - Usability: Collaborate with product managers and designers to gain a deep understanding of problems to be solved, build intuitive applications that delight clinicians, and increse the learning rate of teams. - AI/ML Design: Collaborate with clinical AI researchers and machine learning engineers to make effective tradeoffs for healthcare, improve evals and learning loops, and build trustworthy agents. - Data Analytics: Collaborate with researchers and data analysts so that we can measure product usage, cost, and impact to evaluate how much value our products create for health systems across the country. - Delivery: Design products that are easy to configure, rollout, and support to health systems across the country so that we can expand rapidly while maintaining high product quality. - Distributed Systems: Design systems for challenging workloads to handle the wide range of retrieval, reasoning, and action needed for complex patient care. - Healthcare Integrations: Design reliable and clear semantics for our systems to understand and act on patient care journeys, continuously learning more about our healthcare system and the surrounding technology ecosystem. Why Here: Ambience powers both real-time and large scale clinical workflows at the country's largest and most intense health systems. Product experience, system performance, and model effectiveness directly influence whether clinicians use our products and how much positive impact we can create for patient care. Our products create tangible financial value for health systems, with each product's business case compounding the next. We are growing rapidly across customers, patient population served, and product surface area. We contend with scale in a traditional sense: more health systems, more clinicians, more patients, more healthcare data, and more events to process, faster. We also handle "semantic scale," the collection of problems that only arise when building for systems that can understand and act on the real world in complex, high stakes domains. We equip staff engineers with small teams, high trust, and direct access to leadership. You will collaborate with sharp and compassionate people. We have experienced clinicians across our entire organization, including our in-house team of clinical AI researchers who both practice medicine in top health systems and build the models that power our products, a massive internal advantage in this space. The strength of our platform and our relationships with health system stakeholders provide us with a front seat to transforming healthcare, deeper and more intimate than what you will find at any other tech vendor, AI lab, or consulting firm. That is the level of involvement required to move safely and rapidly in this space. Life at Ambience Working at Ambience means opting into a high-ownership, high-trust environment built for people who want to grow fast, operate decisively and focus on work that matters. This could be the right place for you if you want to - Work on mission-critical AI technology that directly improves clinicians’ day-to-day lives and health system financial health across some of the most complex, high-stakes workflows in the world. - Join a “dream team” culture where we hire exceptional people, expect exceptional outcomes and invest deeply in feedback and continuous growth. We operate as a championship team, and that means being ok with hard, uncomfortable, ambiguous problems that lead to real greatness. - Operate with real ownership and accountability in an environment where there are no bystanders: If something is broken, we fix it! You will have meaningful autonomy and be expected to drive work to completion. To help you do your best work, we pair these expectations with benefits intentionally designed to help you feel supported and safe at Ambience and beyond. Some of our key benefits include - Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents - 401(k) with a company match of up to 3% of base salary - A remote-friendly culture (with a San Francisco HQ) and full equipment provisioning to ensure you can work effectively from wherever you’re based. - Parental leave to support your family needs - Annual company-wide off-sites, team off-sites and regular team lunches and all-hands gatherings, with travel, lodging and meals covered - Flexible time off with no annual cap, company-wide holidays and an annual holiday shutdown from December 24–January 1 designed to support real rest and long-term sustainability.
