Job description

We read every application. No AI screening. A real person reviews your materials. PayJunction is seeking a Product Manager to own our Payment Experience domain - the merchant-facing acceptance surface that generates processing revenue and enables merchant retention. This PM owns the products and services merchants interact with to take payments: the Virtual Terminal (the daily transaction tool for thousands of active merchants), surcharging (PayJunction’s clearest merchant-level revenue lever, constrained by state law and card-brand rules), tender types (card, ACH, BNPL via Sunbit, Apple Pay), and the login and security layer on those surfaces. This Product Manager operates as the CEO of the Payment Experience domain: accountable for business outcomes - processing revenue, merchant adoption, deal-enablement - not just features shipped. They bring payments fluency from day one and apply it to optimize existing payment experiences, create new ones, and continuously improve the merchant’s daily payment workflow. Why PayJunction? PayJunction is relentless and emphatic about helping others. We exist to drive the success of our partners. Specifically, the developers who connect to us, businesses who process payments through us, and all of our team members who work with us at PayJunction. We believe dreams inspire people to start a business, and others to partner with them. While building these dreams, entrepreneurs and business professionals will face many challenges along the way. We believe great partners can make all the difference. We are your dream partner. Your success is our success. Our dream is to help you realize yours. We exist to drive the success of our partners. We do this by fundamentally changing the way you transact with others. We just happen to make great payment systems. If you love helping others succeed, in a culture that celebrates perfecting your craft, consider partnering with us. Location PayJunction takes a Flex First approach to work environments. This means that our team members can choose to work from our Santa Barbara office or remotely from home. We ensure that everyone has the resources and equipment to work where they feel most productive. We trust our teams to make the best decision for their work environment. All PayJunction employees must reside in one of the following states: CA, IL, TX, MN, CO, GA, CT, NC, NY or MA. Mission Our mission at PayJunction's Product Department is to drive relentless innovation and deliver customer-centric payment solutions. Through in-depth research, collaboration, and a deep understanding of market and user needs, we continuously challenge the status quo. We strive not only to meet industry standards but to set them, ensuring every transaction is efficient, transparent, and built on trust, all while delivering unparalleled value to our clients and partners. Vision To lead the frontier of payment innovation, continuously challenging and reshaping industry norms. We envision a future where our disruptive solutions not only redefine transaction experiences but also set the global standard for what's next in payment technology. Responsibilities • Own the product vision, strategy, and quarterly roadmap for the Payment Experience domain. Articulate where we are going, why, in what order, and what we are choosing not to do. • Own the full payment experience lifecycle across the domain — VT, surcharging, tender types, and login/security. Each payment service has a defined adoption target, merchant-facing education or configuration strategy, and post-ship validation. • Drive surcharge enrollment growth as the domain’s clearest revenue lever. Navigate state legality, card-brand rules, and merchant-facing constraints to design enrollment strategies that are compliant and effective. • Manage tender-type adoption and expansion. Own the BNPL (Sunbit) partnership, ACH, Apple Pay, and future payment methods. Drive merchant-facing education and activation to increase adoption rates. • Build and maintain the product backlog with strategic intent. Prioritize based on business value, cost of delay, and merchant impact. Maintain 2–4 sprints of ready work at all times. • Conduct product discovery before committing major work. Talk to merchants, listen to support calls, analyze usage patterns, review competitive payment experiences. Validate before building. • Navigate regulated payments constraints as first-class design inputs. Treat card-brand rules, PCI scope, state surcharge regulations, and Nacha/ACH rules as product problems to solve, not checkboxes to clear. • Write benefit hypotheses for major initiatives and validate outcomes post-ship. Own the full cycle: discover, plan, build, ship, measure, learn. • Collaborate with engineering during sprint planning, refinement, and execution. Be available, be clear, and treat developers as partners in building the right thing. • Communicate proactively with stakeholders. Send monthly domain updates. Surface trade-offs and sequencing changes before people have to ask. • Triage all incoming requests in the domain. Accept, defer, decline, or route. Every request gets a visible disposition within 10 business days. Qualifications • 7+ years of experience as a Product Manager or in a similar product leadership role • 3+ years working with Agile/Scrum teams, driving (not just participating in) sprint planning, refinement, and backlog health • Direct experience in payments, acceptance, or processing (gateway, acquirer, processor, or merchant-facing payment product) - must understand authorization, capture, settlement, interchange, and funding at a product-decision level • Proven track record of navigating regulated payments constraints (surcharge legality, card-brand rules, PCI, Nacha/ACH, state regulations) as product design inputs • Proven track record of outcome-focused delivery with measurable business impact — revenue lift, adoption rate improvement, retention contribution, or deal-enablement tied to products owned • Experience owning merchant-facing or SMB-facing product experiences where the end user is a business operator managing daily payment workflows • Experience with B2B SaaS product management - understands SaaS delivery, multi-tenant considerations, and merchant lifecycle • Experience with BNPL, alternative tender types, or payment method expansion preferred • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and product intake/discovery tools preferred • Product management certifications (CSPO, PSPO, or equivalent) preferred • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, or a related field preferred About PayJunction Founded in 2000 by three UCSB graduates, PayJunction has grown from a bootstrapped startup to a recognized and respected leader in the payments industry.
