Job description

PREFECT prefect.io BUILDS AND OPERATES RESILIENT, PYTHONIC ORCHESTRATION AND MCP PLATFORMS -- PREFECT OSS github.com, PREFECT CLOUD prefect.io, FASTMCP OSS, gofastmcp.com AND HORIZON prefect.io USED FOR MISSION-CRITICAL WORKLOADS. Our Vision: Prefect will define automation for the context era. Our Mission: Curate an intelligent context layer that delivers the right information at the right time. About Prefect Prefect builds automation for an unpredictable world. The last decade of automation was about protecting workflows from unpredictability; in the agentic era, unpredictability is the point. Our mission is to give people confidence in automated work, whether that work is a mission-critical data pipeline or a fleet of AI agents. In August 2026, Prefect and Dagster, competitors for eight years, joined forces to build the next generation of automation infrastructure. Today, our ecosystem includes Dagster, the data platform; Prefect, the agent platform; and FastMCP, the leading open-source developer framework for the MCP ecosystem. Together, our open-source and commercial products are trusted by Fortune 500 companies, data innovators, and high-growth technology companies around the world. We think of our culture as the operating system of the company. We’ve carefully created a supportive, high-performance environment that empowers our team to do the best work of their careers, have meaningful impact, and continue growing personally and professionally. We’re a remote-first team that values high standards, ownership, and thoughtful collaboration. ROLE SUMMARY: Product work at Prefect currently lives inside our engineering organization and engineers carry real product ownership. As we grow, co-ordination across products becomes more important and we are looking for a Director of Product to manage product responsibilities across our portfolio. You will be our most senior dedicated product person, responsible for making our three products work as one coherent portfolio. You'll build our discovery and validation practices and coach our engineers on the product side of their work. You won't inherit a product org and instead will arrive as a team of one inside an engineering-led company. This role will report to our Head of Engineering, Jenny. WHAT YOU'LL DO: - Drive product decisions for shared surfaces across our products such as where certain enterprise features live and what consolidated auth and billing will look like. You will work with product leads (typically Engineering Directors) to align each product's roadmap to the company vision. - Build our product discovery practice - user conversations, customer signal, and problem validation. You don't run every conversation yourself but you set the standard for how discovery gets done, facilitate it across surfaces, and coach engineers to run their own user conversations well. You'll be a key partner to engineers in framing problems and help ground what we choose to build in customer evidence. - Coach the product side of our product engineers - our model asks engineers to carry real product judgment, and you raise that bar across the org helping engineers to frame problems, weigh evidence, talk to users, and decide what not to build. - Design and own the system for measuring the success of what we ship. This includes defining what "it worked" means and the practice of validating after launch. You make sure that post launch validation happens and happens honestly. And that what we learn feeds back into what we build next. YOUR QUALIFICATIONS: - 10+ years in product, with real product management experience at the leadership level — you've owned multi-team roadmaps, driven tough prioritization decisions and shipped through others without direct authority over them. - You've operated in start-ups and engineering-led orgs. You know how to carry product weight through influence, without a PM org or a reporting line over the people building. - You synthesize across domains. Multi-product portfolios, platform/product tension, or post-acquisition integration experience is a strong signal. - Deep familiarity with the modern data stack, orchestration, or developer tools. Bonus for hands-on experience with agentic systems or MCP. - You've made other people better at product. WHAT YOU'LL GET IN RETURN Base Salary Ranges: - San Francisco Bay Area & NYC Metro: $221,000–$276,000 - Washington D.C., Boston, LA Metro, Seattle: $200,000–$257,000 - Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, & all other U.S. metros: $191,000–$238,000 Actual base salary within each range depends on the candidate's location, experience, and qualifications. Please keep in mind that equity and benefits are not included in the range provided above. Your recruiter can share more about the salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process. Perks and Benefits: - Remote-first team with flexible-first culture - Equity Stock Options - 401(k) with 5% company match (vests immediately!) - Unlimited PTO - Medical, Dental and Vision insurance - Generous Parental Leave - Life Insurance and Disability benefits - $800/month remote work stipend And that's just the start — for more info check out our benefits and perks on our careers page.
