Job description

ABOUT TAXWIRE Taxwire is building an AI-native global sales tax engine & managed service for finance teams. We handle sales tax and VAT from end to end for hundreds of mid-market companies and dozens of accounting / tax firms. We’ve raised ~$25M in venture capital from firms like Headline, XYZ, Vinyl, and dozens of CFOs, founders, and tax practitioners. Indirect tax is high-stakes, fragmented, and unforgiving. Rules change constantly, vary by product and location, and create real financial risk when companies get them wrong. We hire people with high ownership, strong judgment, and low ego. Everyone at Taxwire is expected to understand the customer, solve messy problems end to end, and build systems that scale. We move quickly because our customers depend on us to get it right. Death and taxes are forever. If you want to operate in one of the largest markets in the world and solve a massive, enduring problem with a team of people playing to win, Taxwire is the place to do it. ABOUT THE ROLE We're hiring an account manager to own delivery of exceptional client service and compliance outcomes. Our customers trust us to manage a mission-critical compliance function where mistakes create real financial and operational risk. You'll own a portfolio of customers after onboarding. You’ll understand their businesses, keep their compliance programs running smoothly, answer questions about our technology, and solve problems before they become escalations. You’ll be the person customers trust to know what’s happening, what matters, and what comes next. This is a proactive, service-driven role: manage risk, lead strategic conversations, drive renewals and expansion, and consistently delight customers. You don't need to know everything about sales tax or VAT compliance or tax engine, but you must understand indirect tax well enough to ask the right questions and bring in the right experts when needed. You’ll also help build the account management function itself—from health scoring and business reviews to renewal processes and cross-functional feedback loops. WHAT YOU’LL DO OWN CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS - Serve as the primary ongoing relationship owner for a portfolio of customers. - Learn each customer’s business model, systems, jurisdictions, compliance footprint, and priorities. - Give customers a clear view of their compliance program, open issues, deadlines, and next steps through regular check-ins and strategic reviews. DRIVE RETENTION AND GROWTH - Own customer health, satisfaction, retention, and renewal readiness across your portfolio. - Identify risks early, create clear plans to address them, and lead renewal conversations with Sales and company leadership. - Identify expansion opportunities created by new jurisdictions, entities, products, transaction volume, or international growth. COORDINATE COMPLIANCE OUTCOMES - Partner closely with Tax and Operations to ensure customer commitments are met. - Coordinate responses to notices, filing issues, registrations, and data problems. Translate them into clear, confident customer communication. - Close every feedback loop and escalate issues based on urgency and risk. BUILD SCALABLE SYSTEMS - Create account plans, customer-health signals, renewal forecasts, playbooks, and reusable communication templates. - Turn recurring customer questions into better documentation, workflows, and structured feedback that Product and Engineering can act on. - Use automation and AI-assisted workflows to increase leverage without sacrificing judgment or customer trust. WHAT YOU NEED - You’re an exceptional communicator. You make complicated tax and compliance issues clear without creating confusion or unnecessary alarm. - You’re a finisher. You spot risks early, take ownership when something goes wrong, and drive it through resolution. - You have strong customer and commercial judgment. You know how to earn trust, protect the relationship, and recognize opportunities to grow it. - You don’t lose the details. You can manage a portfolio of customers, competing deadlines, and high-stakes issues without dropping the ball. - You’re comfortable with ambiguity. You don’t need a perfect playbook. You’ll help us write it. - 5+ years of relevant professional experience across account management, customer success, client services, tax technology, accounting, or indirect tax. - Experience owning ongoing customer relationships and measurable customer outcomes. - Working knowledge of US sales and use tax, VAT/GST, or another indirect-tax discipline. - Comfort working with structured data, spreadsheets, CRM systems, and operational workflows. NICE TO HAVE - Experience at an indirect-tax software or services provider such as Avalara, TaxJar, Vertex, Thomson Reuters, Stripe Tax, or a SALT practice. - Experience supporting multistate sales-tax compliance, registrations, notices, nexus analysis, or taxability questions. - Experience owning renewals, retention, expansion, or net revenue retention. - Experience working at a high-growth or early-stage company. WHY WORK AT TAXWIRE - You’ll own meaningful customer relationships in a complex, mission-critical category. - You’ll help build the account-management function rather than inherit a rigid playbook. - You’ll work with a deeply experienced team across tax, product, engineering, and operations. - You’ll have direct influence over the product and how we serve customers. - We hold a high bar, move quickly, and care deeply about the people depending on our work. - Competitive salary, meaningful equity, company-covered benefits, and PTO. WHY YOU SHOULDN’T WORK AT TAXWIRE - You want a narrow role or prefer waiting for customers to contact you instead of managing relationships proactively. - You avoid difficult conversations or accountability for customer outcomes. - You are uncomfortable learning complex subjects or working in a technical, regulated, deadline-driven environment. - You need a mature playbook or are uncomfortable with early-stage ambiguity and fast iteration. - Working hard and having a high degree of responsiveness to customers scares you. BENEFITS - Company-covered benefits - Meaningful equity - Unlimited PTO
