Job description

ABOUT TAXWIRE Taxwire is building an AI-native global sales tax engine & managed service for finance teams. We handle sales tax and VAT from end to end for hundreds of mid-market companies and dozens of accounting / tax firms. We’ve raised ~$25M in venture capital from firms like Headline, XYZ, Vinyl, and dozens of CFOs, founders, and tax practitioners. Indirect tax is high-stakes, fragmented, and unforgiving. Rules change constantly, vary by product and location, and create real financial risk when companies get them wrong. We hire people with high ownership, strong judgment, and low ego. Everyone at Taxwire is expected to understand the customer, solve messy problems end to end, and build systems that scale. We move quickly because our customers depend on us to get it right. Death and taxes are forever. If you want to operate in one of the largest markets in the world and sovle a massive, enduring problem with a team of people playing to win, Taxwire is the place to do it. ABOUT THE ROLE We’re looking for a full-stack engineer who cares deeply about winning and solving customer problems. You’ll ship new products end to end and embed in our users’ workflows to automate, streamline, and delight wherever possible. WHAT YOU’LL BUILD Examples of what you’d build / where you’d contribute at Taxwire if you joined today. New products: You'll work directly with Andrew (CEO) and Kent (Head of Product) to ship new customer-facing features and product lines. Think leveraging agents to automate specific high-friction workflows customers deal with today to bigger swings that change what customers expect from compliance providers and help us expand into new customer segments. Our tax filings engine & managed compliance services: Fully automated sales tax compliance runs on a stack of half-manual workflows that mostly work until they don't, and the failure is expensive. You’ll help us build the automation layer that helps us scale without sacrificing accuracy. The core work is the filing pipeline: calculating what's owed, preparing returns, and submitting them to state portals across every jurisdiction we cover. Some states have APIs. Many don't. The automation has to handle both. Navigating portals, reconciling confirmations from customers, managing payment infrastructure, and surfacing only the genuinely ambiguous cases for human review instead of routing everything there by default. Beyond submissions, there's the operational layer that surrounds them: pulling new customer registrations in from external platforms, automating the data and approval workflows our tax team uses to review filings before they go out, and building the internal tooling that gives them visibility and control as the volume scales. You'll work closely with Marissa and the broader tax ops team — they run the operations end-to-end and they'll tell you exactly where the automation breaks down. WHO THRIVES HERE Senior engineers with 5-10 years of experience, maybe more. A few archetypes we've seen do well: Former founders. People who’ve built something and either sold it, shut it down, or otherwise moved on. We have a handful on the team already. They tend to be high-agency and outcome-oriented. We give them a lot of ground and let them run. Future founders. People who haven’t started their thing yet but plan to eventually, and want to see what a winning team looks like before they go do it themselves. The customer-curious. People obsessed with the customer and the business problems. They want to be on the calls, doing interviews, taking some of the customer-facing work over themselves. The engineers who do best here become best friends with Marissa. Builders who want to win. We’re deeply serious about the work, our customers, and doing whatever it takes to win. Engineers who want to see the business succeed first and foremost thrive here. WHAT YOU’LL DO - Own features end-to-end, from scoping and architecture to shipping and iterating based on real customer feedback. - Build and maintain core product surfaces: the customer dashboard, onboarding flows, monitoring and reporting tools, and the internal tooling our tax ops team depends on daily. - Work with the tax ops team directly to understand where automation breaks down and design solutions that scale without sacrificing accuracy. - Work with our product leader and founders to design, build, and ship new products from end to end. - Contribute to the filing pipeline, calculating liabilities, preparing returns, submitting to state portals (with and without APIs), and handling the edge cases that break naive automation. - Translate complex compliance workflows into UI that's clear, fast, and doesn't require a manual to use. - Participate in architectural decisions, not just execute them. We want your opinion and expect you to push back when something doesn't make sense. - Keep quality high as we move fast. That means tests where they matter, clean interfaces between systems, and code your teammates can reason about six months later. WHAT YOU NEED - 5–10+ years of engineering experience, with meaningful time shipping full-stack products on small teams. - Strong command of React and TypeScript. You've built production apps you're proud of — not just maintained other people's work. - Experience owning features end-to-end, including working with design, defining backend contracts, and shipping to real users. - Good product taste. You don't need to be a designer, but you notice when something is off and you fix it. - Comfort with ambiguity. You can take a rough problem statement — not a polished spec — and turn it into something real. - Willingness to have direct, honest conversations when you disagree with a technical or product direction. WHY WORK AT TAXWIRE - Own new customer-facing products from architecture through launch and iteration - Work directly with our CEO, Head of Product, tax team, and our customers. - Build automation that materially changes how global compliance work gets done WHY YOU SHOULDN’T WORK AT TAXWIRE - You want narrowly scoped tickets rather than end-to-end ownership - You aren’t interested in talking with customers or understanding the operational work behind the product - You prefer optimizing mature systems to building new products in an ambiguous environment - You don't want to have a deep degree of ownership of your work. BENEFITS - Company-covered benefits - Meaningful equity - Unlimited PTO
