Job description
Staff GPU Engineer – Shader RTL & Microarchitecture – Tier-1 Semiconductor SoC Designer
The client
The client is a top‑5 global semiconductor company renowned for its system‑on‑chip designs, delivering cutting‑edge GPU IP across mobile, automotive, laptop, IoT, AI, and VR/AR markets. With a strong R&D footprint in the United States and worldwide design centres, they combine deep silicon expertise with a focus on performance‑per‑area and power efficiency.
Operating at the forefront of graphics technology, the organisation supports a broad portfolio of flagship and mainstream products and is investing heavily in next‑generation shader architectures to maintain its market leadership.
The role
In this senior engineering role you will define, design and deliver the next generation of GPU shader subsystem microarchitecture and RTL, driving performance, power and area optimisation across a range of emerging applications.
You will:
• Define and own GPU shader subsystem microarchitecture specifications.
• Lead RTL design for shader pipelines, instruction issue, operand collection, register files and dependency tracking.
• Collaborate with architecture, compiler and driver teams to translate ISA and API requirements into efficient hardware.
• Analyse workloads to improve occupancy, throughput, latency hiding and power efficiency.
• Support the full GPU IP lifecycle from RTL coding through verification, synthesis, tape‑out and post‑silicon bring‑up.
Your background
• 8+ years (Staff) or 10+ years (Senior Staff) of RTL, microarchitecture or architecture experience in GPUs, graphics, AI accelerators or high‑performance SoCs.
• Proficiency with SystemVerilog, Verilog, VHDL and software languages such as C/C++ and Python.
• Strong knowledge of timing, area, power, clocking, CDC/RDC and low‑power design flows.
• Solid understanding of GPU architecture, shader pipelines, memory hierarchy and performance‑power trade‑offs.
• Experience with RTL quality flows, lint, formal checks, assertions and debug.
Salary $150000 – $244000 Location San Diego, CA or San Jose, CA (4 days onsite) At PER International we believe the best engineering teams are also the most diverse. We welcome applications from candidates of every background, and assure every applicant that they will be assessed on the strength of their work and ambition — without regard to race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability.
